What are the advantages and rewards of Replenish 360’s IV Hydration Therapy focused on Wellness and Preventative intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) services with Vitamin C or Ascorbic Acid?

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) is a major water-soluble antioxidant that is present in fruit and vegetables in the diet and offers many functions in maintaining optimum health and fitness. It is an essential micronutrient for humans due to its pleiotropic functions or ability to donate electrons that create a very potent antioxidant and a cofactor for a family of biosynthetic and gene regulatory enzymes.

Recent scientific evidence indicates that an increased intake of Vitamin C is associated with a reduced risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and cataract, probably through antioxidant mechanisms.

Recently, the Dietary Reference Intake Panel of the Institute of Medicine recommended a Vitamin C dietary allowance of 90 mg/d for men and 75 mg/d for women.

High Benefits of Vitamin C:

Other Likely Benefits of Vitamin C:

Dietary Intake and Dosage:

When taken for the Daily Requirements of of Vitamin C in the absence of deficiency or disease, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of Vitamin C is as follows:

  • Recently, the Dietary Reference Intake Panel of the Institute of Medicine recommended a Vitamin C dietary allowance of 90 mg/d for men and 75 mg/d for women.
  • In the absence of deficiency, daily requirements are up to 45 mg per day in children, 90 mg per day for men, 75 mg per day for women, and up to 120 mg per day for women who are lactating.

When taken for the treatment and management of Vitamin C Deficiency (Scurvy), the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of Vitamin C is as follows:

  • Direct replacement of Vitamin C is standard, with up to 300 mg daily for children and 500 mg to 1000 mg daily for adults.
  • The endpoint of replacement is one month or upon resolution of clinical sequelae.
  • Alternative treatment regimens for adults include one to 2 g for up to 3 days followed by 500 mg daily for a week followed by 100 mg daily for up to 3 months.
  • In addition to immediate supplementation, educate the patient on lifestyle modifications to ensure adequate intake, and recommend cessation of alcohol, and tobacco use.

When taken for the management of the Common Cold, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of Vitamin C is as follows:

  • Most research shows that taking 1-3 grams of Vitamin C might shorten the course of the cold by 1 to 1.5 days.
  • Taking vitamin C does not appear to prevent colds.

When taken for the reduction of Chronic Diseases, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of Vitamin C is as follows:

  • The totality of the reviewed data on some clinical studies suggests that an intake of 90–100 mg Vitamin C per day is required for optimum reduction of chronic disease risk in nonsmoking men and women.

When taken for the alleviation of General Inflammation, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of Vitamin C is as follows:

  • Vitamin C (600 mg twice daily) has potential effects in alleviating inflammatory status by reducing hs-CRP, IL-6 and FBG in hypertensive and/or diabetic obese patients.

When taken for its potential use in Adjunctive Cancer Care, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of Vitamin C is as follows:

  • While IVC may have a variety of possible applications, such as combating infection, treating rheumatoid arthritis, it has generated the most interest for its potential use in adjunctive cancer care.
  • The Riordan intravenous Vitamin C (IVC) protocol involves the slow infusion of vitamin C at doses on the order of 0.1 to 1.0 grams ascorbate per kilogram body mass (Riordan, et al., 2003).
  • Potential use in in adjunctive cancer care in doses up to 25 grams intravenously can be safely used to treat presumptive ascorbate deficiency based on symptoms and could favorably affect clinical parameters such as inflammation, fatigue, and quality of life.
  • Only after a thorough medical and clinical history in addition to a collaborative approach in medical care, please note the use and supplement of high doses of Vitamin C under the direction of your oncologist and other competent health care providers for its potential use in adjunctive cancer care.

When taken for prevention, wellness, and general health, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of Vitamin C is as follows:

  • Children 0 to 6 months: 40 milligrams per day
  • Children 7 to 12 months: 50 milligrams per day
  • Children 1 to 3 years: 15 milligrams per day
  • Children 4 and 8 years: 25 milligrams per day
  • Children 9 to 13 years: 45 milligrams per day
  • Females 14 to 18 years: 65 milligrams per day
  • Males 14 to 18 years: 75 milligrams per day
  • Females 19 and over: 75 milligrams per day
  • Males 19 and over: 90 milligrams per day
  • Pregnant females 14 to 18: 80 milligrams per day
  • Pregnant females 19 and over: 85 milligrams per day
  • Breastfeeding females 14 to 18: 115 milligrams per day
  • Breastfeeding females 19 and over: 120 milligrams per day

Notable Toxicities of Vitamin C:

  • Vitamin C has low toxicity and is not believed to cause serious adverse effects at moderate intakes.

  • However, high doses may have potential adverse effects even though it is a water-soluble vitamin that usually cannot be stored in the body.

  • Gastrointestinal Symptoms:
    • Gastrointestinal Disturbances
      • The most common complaints are mild to moderate to severe diarrhea, nausea, mild abdominal cramps, and other gastrointestinal disturbances due to the osmotic effect of unabsorbed Vitamin C in the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Renal:
    • Kidney Stones
      • More than 2,000 mg or 2G per day may increase risk of kidney stones.
        • High doses of Vitamin C can increase the risk of a rare condition called hyperoxaluria which promotes excretion of oxalic acid in the kidney tubules that may eventually lead to kidney stones.
      • In people who have had a kidney stone, amounts greater than 1000 mg daily greatly increase the risk of kidney stone recurrence.
    • Weight Loss Surgery
      • Too much oxalate in the urine can cause problems such as kidney stones and can increase the risk of kidney failure in people with kidney disease.
        • Weight loss surgery can cause the body to absorb more oxalate from food. This can increase the amount of oxalate in the urine.
        • Vitamin C can also increase the amount of oxalate in the urine.
        • Taking large amounts vitamin C after weight loss surgery might increase the risk of having too much oxalate in the urine.
    • Kidney Transplant Rejection
      • Long-term use of Vitamin C in high doses before a kidney transplant may increase the risk of transplant rejection or delay how long it takes until the transplanted kidney works.
  • Endocrine:
    • Diabetes and Hyperglycemia
      • Vitamin C should be used with caution for any diabetic since it may raise the glucose levels in the body.
  • Cardiac:
    • Heart Attack (Acute Coronary Syndrome, ACS)
      • Vitamin C levels are reduced during a heart attack.
        • However, low vitamin C has not been linked to an increased risk for heart attack.
      • In some studies of older women with diabetes, Vitamin C in high dosages more than 300 mg per day may increase the risk of death from heart disease.
    • Angioplasty and Wound Healing
      • Avoid taking supplements containing Vitamin C or other antioxidant vitamins (beta-carotene, vitamin E) immediately before and following angioplasty without the supervision of a health care professional.
        • These vitamins seem to interfere with proper healing.
  • Neurovascular/Psychiatric:
    • Alzheimer’s Disease and Mental Function
      • Taking Vitamin C along with Vitamin E and alpha-lipoic acid might worsen mental function in people with Alzheimer disease.
    • Schizophrenia and Psychosis
      • Taking Vitamin C along with Vitamin E might worsen psychosis in some people with schizophrenia when taken with antipsychotic drugs.
  • Hematology/Oncology:
    • Cancer
      • Cancerous cells collect high concentrations of Vitamin C.
        • Until more is known, only use high doses of Vitamin C under the direction of your oncologist and competent health care providers.
    • G6PD Deficiency
      • A metabolic deficiency called “glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase” (G6PD) deficiency is needed to be ruled out before starting IV Hydration Therapy in Vitamin C.
      • Large amounts of Vitamin C can cause red blood cells to break (i.e., hemolysis) in people with this condition.
      • Avoid excessive amounts of Vitamin C in those with G6PD Deficiency.
    • Thalassemia and Hemochromatosis
      • Blood-iron disorders, including conditions called “thalassemia” and “hemochromatosis” is needed to be ruled out before starting IV Hydration Therapy in Vitamin C.
      • Vitamin C can increase iron absorption, which might make these conditions worse.
      • Avoid large amounts of Vitamin C in those Thalassemia and Hemochromatosis.
  • Pregnancy:
    • While it is safe to supplement with Vitamin C during pregnancy with dosages between 85 mg to 120 mg, high doses may harm to newborn.
  • Infants and Children:
    • Vitamin C is possibly unsafe when taken by mouth in amounts higher than 400 mg daily for children 1 to 3 years, 650 mg daily for children 4 to 8 years, 1200 mg daily for children 9 to 13 years, and 1800 mg daily for adolescents 14 to 18 years.
  • Anaphylactic Reactions:
    • As with any other supplement or drugs, mild to severe allergic reactions may occur with Vitamin C supplementation for certain individuals.
  • Drug Interactions:
    • Birth Control Side Effects
      • It may slow excretion of estrogen from the body that can increase hormonal side effects in women taking estrogen-based contraceptives (birth control pills that contain some form of estradiol, ethinyl estradiol, or mestranol).
    • Decrease Efficacy of Antipsychotic Drugs
      • The opposite is true of certain antipsychotic drugs such as Prolixin (fluphenazine) when taken together with Vitamin C since supplementation can reduce the concentration of Prolixin in the bloodstream.
    • Decrease Efficacy of Chemotherapy Drugs
      • Vitamin C supplements in some studies found that certain chemotherapy drugs are less effective.
    • Other Drug-Drug Interactions
      • Other medications that may interact with Vitamin C include Exjade (deferasirox), ferrous gluconate (Fergon, Ferrale, Ferate), Ferrous sulfate (FeoSol, Fer-Gen-Sol, Fer Iron), and Warfarin (Coumadin) just to name a few.
    • ETOH and Tobacco
      • Avoid drinking alcohol when taking the supplements as drinking alcohol may diminish many nutrients in the body.
      • Smoking and chewing tobacco lowers vitamin C levels. Vitamin C intake in the diet should be increased in people who smoke or chew tobacco.

Although side effects and overdose of Vitamin C may happen scarcely, it’s best to let your primary care doctor or medical specialist know if you are planning to take Vitamin C supplement for regular, daily and as needed supplement to prevent and manage any potential adverse reactions. If there is suspected overdoses in Vitamin C, it is advisable to go to the nearest and local Emergency Department (ED) or call 911 as a cautionary recommendation. You can also contact the Poison Control Center at (800) 222-1222.

As a general rule, it is always wise to start with lowest dosage as indicated for certain medical conditions and preventative measures to reap the benefits of Vitamin C through our IV Hydration Therapy and Wellness Services at Replenish 360. It’s best to cater to an individualized program and sessions, which our excellent and qualified staff and medical providers are firmly trained to enthusiastically encourage for your overall wellness and fitness goals!

About IV Therapy

“Replenishing your mind and body, restoring you to your best self, and improving your health and everyday performance.”

Our R360 motto above is what we always strive for whenever you come into our one-of-kind and relaxing IV Hydration Therapy and Wellness Clinic. We will always welcome you with open arms in certain cases when you may be sniffling and whimpering through a mild cold, the “achy-breaky” flu, and/or other upper respiratory infection (URI) with or without nausea and vomiting; the “runs” from a bug that you unfortunately caught after consumption of contaminated food; had a bit of a discomforting and nagging hangover from the once-in-a-lifetime party or special occasion you gladly experienced the night before; are a very competitive athlete who may need to boost their physical performance and recovery with IV hydration post-intense workout; or you are just very worn out because of the jet-lag feeling from a red-eye flight and you may have not had the chance to drink enough water and ingest enough nutrients throughout your traveling on top of your busy schedule and the hard days work. These are small and minute but prime examples of different types of sometimes unavoidable life occurrences which may not be at all averted entirely, which may probably lead to your mild to moderate dehydration and the sequelae of uncomfortable signs and symptoms stemming from the lack of daily oral water, nutrients, and vitamin intake.

It is, therefore, only merited that our sole mission is to commit ourselves to reviving and helping healthy people recover from these unforeseen instances of mild to moderate dehydration by administering IV hydration fluids, nutrients, vitamins, and amino acids in addition to other stabilizing and wellness services via our professional mobile and brick/mortar IV Hydration Therapy Clinic and Wellness Clinic to replenish your mind and body, restore you to your best self, and improve your health and everyday performance.

We want to be your favorite and most reliable service and facility of choice for your hydration and adjunct supplementary wellness service needs, not only in our state-of-the-art and tranquil IV Hydration Therapy and Wellness Clinic, but also at the comfort of your own home or hotel room when you are sick with a mild infection affecting your daily physical and mental performance; your special occasions and personal life events such as birthdays, weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, and other extraordinary life celebrations; community events and astounding music festivals like the music festivals, Desert Trip Shows, and other hot entertaining concerts and exceptional celebrations; your local bars, pubs, taverns, night clubs, dance clubs, and other fun venues to prevent the aggravating signs and symptoms of dehydration; and, lastly, immersed in your sporting events at your native gym and maybe even in within an arm’s reach of your practices, tournaments, and competitive sports when you need a little lift with hydration, vitamins, and other nutrients to help you achieve your peak physical and mental performance and recover faster than you could ever have.
